When Gregorio and Florencio jumped ship at Bodega Bay, California in 1913 then swam and floated ashore. They then walked East (away from the Pacific Ocean) all day and most of the night. They lay under a tree to rest and sleep. When they awoke in the morning they found themselves at the edge of a ceme- tery. Florencio said "When I die THIS I WHERE I WANT TO BE BURIED ".
When he died in 1972, his family had him buried under that very tree at the same rest stop of 60 years before.
They found their way to the city of Sebastopol California. When they arrived they found that this is right in the heart of apple country where there were apple orchards, and packinghouses and plants scattered throughout. The Gravenstein apple up here was King and every one else was its slave.
There were many Russian speaking people up here and very few Spanish speaking people but they some how managed.
Florencio was now known as Frank and Gregorio as
Greg. The two had no problem finding jobs. They worked and worked to saved as much money as they could.
After a few yews Florencio bought an apple orchard, they met other Spanish-speaking people in the area and helped them with correspondence to their families back in Spain.
Margarita Sanchez Lorenzo, Florence's younger sister was one to regularly write back. Florencio met a nice young Spanish lady, name was Julia. In 1923 they were married and lived on the ranch that Florencio had purchased earlier. They soon started their family and in 1926 Carmen Lorenzo was born, then in 1927 Martin Lorenzo was born.
By then Gregorio was beginning to get smitten by the charm of Margarita's letters. Gregorio then used some savings to travel back to Spain and see Margarita and family. They were married in 1927, but it took one and a half years and several tries to get Margarita into the USA.
(Did Gregorio's earlier questionable entry to the USA cause a problem? )
So by the time Gregorio was able to return to Sebastopol with Margarita, Florencio and Julia were now about to have their third child, Henry Lorenzo was born 1929.
After a year Gregorio and Margarita were not happy about loosing track of the rest of the family. They moved down to the Sunnyvale area where cannery work was plentiful. They spoke to every Spaniard they met and inquired of their acquaintance with Vitoriano Sanchez and that is how the families reunited.
Of course Margarita let Florencio know where the rest of the family was and they too were then part of this extended family.
In 1933 when Ramona and Austin were married, Florencio and Julia stood up for them.
August 5, 1934 two days before Ramona's and Austin's twins were born, Annie Lorenzo was born to Florenzio and Julia, their youngest child.
Florenzio and Julia and their family continued living in the Sebastopol area for the rest of their life.
Their four children are:
Carmen Lorenzo, born: 1925, Sebastopol, California
Martin Lorenzo, born: 1927, Sebastopol, California
Henry Lorenzo, born: 1929, Sebastopol, California
Annie Lorenzo, born: 1934, Sebastopol, California
. . . Carmen married Tony Kozlowski in 195x, he died in a plane accident in 1982.
The Kozlowski family, Carmen Lorenzo Kozlowski and her daughters and son and grandchildren are the only members of the Sanchez decendents that remain in farming and farm products after 90 years.
They operate the well known "Kozlowski Farms" in the Forestville area of Sonoma County, California.
