Computer Country Dial-Up Customers,

Beginning January 10th, the phone company requires everyone to Oregon to dial the area code for all local numbers. This includes the phone number required for your dial-up connection. We have provided some basic instructions for you to make this necessary change. If you are having trouble making the change, please give us a call. Please note that you will need to change the actual 7 digit phone number to a 10 digit number. Just having an area code present in the "area code" space will not work.

We strongly recommend that you make this change BEFORE January 10th, as we are expecting a lot of support calls immediately after the initial change. If you have any questions on how to make this change, don't hesitate to give us a call.

Again, starting January 10th, if you do not dial the area code along with the regular number, you will not connect!

We have some links to the most common Windows systems, to show you graphically how to make these changes.

Windows Vista    Windows XP   Windows '98

For Windows 98

Double left-click on "My Computer".

Double left-click on "Dial up Connection".

Right-click on the connection you wish to change.

Left-click on "Properties".

Put 541 in front of the dial-up number.

NOTE: Just having the 541 in the area code space WILL NOT WORK!!! The actual phone number MUST be 10 digits long and include the 541 prefix.

For Windows ME

Follow the directions for Windows 98, except that the "Dial up Connections" folder will be found in the "Control Panel".-- i.e double left click on "My Computer", then double left click on "Control Panel". You will find "the Dial-up connections" folder here.

Windows XP

Left Click on your "Start" button.

Move your mouse pointer over to "Connect To".

Left click on "show all connections".

Right-click on the connection you wish to change. (It should be under the "dial up connections" heading).

Left-click on "Properties".

Put 541 in front of the dial-up number.

NOTE: Just having the 541 in the area code space WILL NOT WORK!!! The actual phone number MUST be 10 digits long and include the 541 prefix

If your XP is set to the "Classic" view, you won't see the "Connect To" option. Instead, left click on "Settings" then left-click on "network connections" to view the dial-up connections.

On some XP systems, you will see a dial-up connection box pop up before you actually dial. If this is the case, you can easily change the phone number right here to include the area code--just type in the full 10 digit number. One side note--on many XP systems there is a known "bug" that will require you to re-enter your password if you make a change to an existing connection--even if it looks like the password is present. So once you change the phone number to include the area code, click on the spot that says "Click here to change save password" and re-type your password, or if your password is a series of dots, erase the dots and re-type your password before you try to connect.
